Avery Harris joined the 143rd Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment in August 1862, and was appointed to Company B at Camp Luzern in October 1862. He participated in the battles of Gettysburg and Chancellorsville in 1863, and was promoted to Corporal in August 1863. Harris fought in the battles of the Wilderness, Cold Harbor, North Anna River, Spotsylvania, and Petersburg during 1864. In July 1864 he was promoted to Sergeant. Harris was stationed as a guard at the prison camp on Hart Island, New York Harbor from February 1865 to June 1865. In July 1865 he was discharged when the 143rd Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment was deactivated at Hamburg, Pa.
