Julian Smith Bacon was grandson of Peter Smith, younger brother of Jedediah Strong Smith (1799-1831), mountain man and explorer. Peter Smith was executor of his brother's estate. His youngest daughter, Evelyn, married Walter Bacon. Their son, Julian, using family papers, oral and written histories, sparked renewed interest in contributions of Jedediah Smith toward exploration of West. Collection includes Jedediah Smith estate papers, Peter Smith account book and Smith family correspondence (1877-1954).
