Howard F. Mason was born on 29 October 1901 at Marion, Indiana. In 1927 he served as a radio operator with the Detroit News Wilkins Expedition to the Arctic, operating a station from Barrow, Alaska. He was working at the lighthouse depot on Staten Island, New York, when he joined the United States Antarctic Expedition, 1928-1930 (leader Richard Evelyn Byrd), as a radio operator. After the expedition, he worked for the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard at Bremerton, Washington. He died on 26 June 1996 at Seattle, Washington.
