Edward Chapman Shoman was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1919. He was raised in and became a lifelong resident of Akron, Ohio. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a Master Sergeant. After his military service, he gained employment at the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in 1947. Shoman became the marketing manager of big tire sales. These included off-the-road tires for large earth moving equipment, including those that constructed the Trans-Alaska Pipeline in 1975. In 1977, he was rewarded with the Goodyear Spirit Award which recognizes an employee's strive for perfection, satisfaction in a job well done, and working for and within one's community. Shoman retired in 1981 after 34 years of service with the company. In addition to his work at Goodyear, Shoman was a 32nd Degree Mason and a devout member of the United Methodist Church. He died in 2007 at the age of 87.
