Leon Hugh (Cozy) McSparron was born in 1894 in Gallup, New Mexico. Growing up near the Navajo Reservation, Cozy became an early Navajo speaker. Former Thunderbird Ranch owner, Hartley Seymour, urged Cozy McSparron to move to Chinle to train Seymour to box. Cozy began working at Thunderbird Ranch and in the 1920s, bought out Hartley Seymour thus becoming the owner of the trading post. Thunderbird Ranch (now Thunderbird Lodge) is located 400 meters south of the mouth of Canyon de Chelly. Cozy and his wife, Inja McSparron, are credited for encouraging Navajo weavers at that time to return to the use of vegetable dyes in wool dying. They are also credited for influencing better quality weaving of Navajo rugs in the Chinle area. Cozy McSparron raised his family, which included his two daughters, Laramie and Marion McSparron in Chinle, Arizona. He retired from Thunderbird Ranch in 1956, selling the trading post to the Navajo Tribe. He died November 1, 1959. Dr. Thomas Noble, Jr. of Indianapolis, Indiana was a frequent visitor to Thunderbird Ranch in the 1920s. He was a medical doctor and the photographer of the portraits of the Navajo men in this collection. Later in Cozy's life, he became a patient of Dr. Noble.
