John Frederick Messick, mathematician and educator, was born in 1875 in Allen, Maryland, and died 6 October 1951, in Atlanta, Georgia. He was a graduate of Randolph Macon College for Men (A.B.) and Johns Hopkins University (Ph. D.), and taught at Willims College, Alabama Polytechnic Institute, and Emory University (1920-1944) where he was a professor and chairman of the Mathematics Department. He was married to Epie Blackwell (d. 1968), daughter of Robert E. Blackwell, a president of Randolph Macon College, Virginia.
