Donald Chaput was born Dec. 19, 1933, in Hubbell, Mich. He graduated from Northland College in Ashland, Wis., and Michigan State University. He completed course studies at the University of Detroit and the University of Paris. From 1959-1964, he taught history in several Michigan schools. In Feb. of 1966, he began his career as a historic site specialist (identifying and selecting historical landmarks) for the Michigan Historical Commission. In later years, he became editor of the Michigan history magazine. He wrote two books involving the copper mining industry, The Cliff, America's first great copper mine, and Hubbell, a copper county village.

Chaput (1933- ) was born in Hubbell (Mich.). He graduated from Lake Linden-Hubbell High School and earned a B.A. (1957) at Northland College in Ashland (Wis.) and a M.A. (1959) from Michigan State University. He joined the Michigan Historical Commission in 1966 and served as the Deputy Director and Editor of Michigan History, 1966-1971. In 1972 he became curator at the Museum of Natural History, Los Angeles. (Information from his Hubbell book.) Chaput was a consultant for the Dictionary of Canadian Biography. The Clarke Historical Library has four of his books about Michigan, Native Americans, and copper mining.
