Nightwood is the only professional theatre company in Canada with diversity at every level of its organization.
Nightwood Theatre is the oldest and now, the only professional women's theatre company in Canada. It is the nationally recognized forum for the creation of original plays written and directed by women with different economic, racial, national, sexual and social backgrounds. Nightwood receives funding from all levels of government, and is supported by the Laidlaw, Joan Chalmers, Nancy Ruth's Very Own and du Maurier Foundations. Nightwood receives support from the private sector as well as philanthropic donations from over 100 individuals.
Nightwood Theatre was formed in 1979 by Cynthia Grand, Kim Renders, Mary Vingoe and Maureen White. They had a vision for a different kind of theatre based on a collaborative working mode and a shared imagistic aesthetic. Although they did not call themselves a women's theatre company, the strong female-centered consciousness was evident in their work.
