A dance therapist at the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation for more than thirty years, Mitcheltree began studying dance as a child in Salt Lake City before enrolling in The University of Utah's program for Modern Dance. Mitcheltree has a master of arts from New York University in art therapy, board certification in dance/movement therapy practice, and is a licensed creative arts therapist certified by the National Certification Corporation.
Mitcheltree also served as an assistant editor for the 1980 publication, Movement and Growth: Dance Therapy for the Special Child, the content for which was taken from proceedings of New York University's Center for Educational Research's 1979 Symposium of Dance Therapy for the Special Child.
