Carmalt: practiced medicine at St. Luke's Hospital, N.Y.C.; private practice in New York, until the Civil War, during which he served as surgeon; from 1870-1874 studied medicine in Europe; in 1876 moved to New Haven, Connecticut, and opened practice as an ophthomologist; in 1879 became professor of ophthomology at Yale Medical School; later professor of surgery; surgeon and member of board of directors of New Haven Hospital, 1881-1894.
