The Advisory Committee on and Office of Theology and Worship was established in 1967 under the U.S.A. National Committee of the Lutheran World Federation (USANC) as the successor body to the National Lutheran Council's Division of Lutheran World Federation Affairs' Department of Theological Cooperation. Its primary function was to foster lines of communication between the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) member churches in the U.S. and the theological concerns of two of the LWF Commissions: Commission on Theology and the Commission on Worship and Spiritual Life. Paul D. Opsahl served as the Office's director.
In 1970, in response to the LWF's organizational restructuring, activities of the Office of Theology and Worship and the Office of Stewardship, Evangelism, and Education were assumed by the newly created Office of Studies.
