The Committee on General Relativity and Gravitation (Comité Gravitation et Relativité) was founded in 1959 in Paris at the Conference on General Relativity and Gravitation in order to coordinate collaboration in scientific work in the field, organize international conferences, and promote information useful to all interested in the field. Bulletin publication began in 1962. With the adoption of a constitution in 1973, the name became the International Society for General Relativity and Gravitation.
