Indian Henry, ca. 1800-

Hide Profile

Indian Henry, as he was known to the early settlers of Washington, was probably born around 1800. Soo-Too-Lick was Indian Henry's native name. He was probably born either in the Klickitat or Nisqually tribe. But it is believed, it was probably the Nisqually tribe. Indian Henry was taught his hunting skills by his father and he developed them until he had a reputation as a great hunter. Indian Henry's hunting grounds on Mt. Rainier were so well known that a trail is named Indian Henry's Hunting Ground Trail on Mt. Rainier. The trail that Indian Henry used became the first road to Tacoma and the military link between Fort Steilacoom and Eastern Washington. The folktale is that Indian Henry took the founders of Eatonville, WA to the Valley and told them it was a good place for them to settle. Indian Henry had three wives. When he took up a claim and settled in the Ohop Valley, the judge ordered him to decide on a permanent wife and relinquish his other wives, which he did. Indian Henry was a good friend to the early settlers when they were settling the Washington Territory. Indian Henry furnished working parties of his tribesmen for James Longmire to build a trail to Mt. Rushmore in 1861. Indian Henry and his sons lived in the Mashell Prairie for years. Indian Henry was buried in the Indian cemetery in the Mashel Valley.
