Sam B. Cantey III was born in Fort Worth in 1914. He was the son of Sam Cantey, Jr. and grandson of Sam Cantey, Sr., both well-known Fort Worth attorneys. He graduated from Culver Military Academy and Washington and Lee University. He began collecting art while he was a student. He became involved in banking and eventually became a vice-president of the First National Bank. He was a board member, past president and acquisition committee chairman of the Fort Worth Art Association and a member of the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce's Fine Arts Committee. He was involved in a wide range of charitable and artistic organizations. He died November 4, 1973, in Mexico.
