Taylor was a Private in Co.B, 1st North Carolina Volunteer Infantry (1898-99) and served in Cuba. Became a Private in Co.H. of the 12th U.S. Infantry in 1899. Served with the unit in the Philippines (1901-03) and was promoted to Corporal (1901) and Sergeant (1902). Became Private 1st Class with the Detachment Hospital Corps at Fort Duchesne, Utah (1903-05). Was appointed Ensign, 2nd Division, Naval Brigade, North Carolina National Guard (1907-08). Had various civilian jobs until 1919 when he became an auditor for the U.S. Treasury Dept.
