Elliott Dunlap Smith was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1891. He graduated from Harvard University with a B.A. in 1913 and an LL.B. in 1916. He also received an honorary M.A. from Yale University in 1928, when he joined the faculty there. He later became Falk Professor of social relations at Carnegie-Mellon University. He was married to Marie (Francke) Smith, with whom he had three children. He died on January 26, 1976, in New Haven, Connecticut.
