In 1990, the College of Home Economics was renamed the College of Human Ecology. The goal of the college is to study "people and their relationship with the world, over a life span."
The first courses in home economics offered at the University of Minnesota were through the agricultural school in 1894. In 1900, the School of Agriculture began to offer college level courses in home economics. In 1962, courses in the newly established College of Home Economics included nutrition and food science, home management, education, related art and textiles. The College of Human Ecology currently is made up of four academic units, the school of social work, the department of design, housing and apparel, family social science, and food science and nutrition.
