Carl Sharsmith (1903-1994) was Professor of Botany at San Jose State University from 1950 to 1973. Summers he worked as a naturalist in the Tuolumne Meadows area of Yosemite National Park (Calif.). In addition to guiding visitors, Sharsmith did basic research on the alpine meadows of the High Sierra, gathering thousands of herbarium samples and publishing several research papers. Most of his specimens are housed in the Carl W. Sharsmith Herbarium, San José State University.
