The American Red Cross, Harvard Unit, was established to assist the American Red Cross (also known as the American National Red Cross) in its annual fund raising efforts. Harvard Unit chairmen, working with the local Cambridge Red Cross Chapter, were responsible for organizing the fund raising campaign throughout the University. A letter and contribution form were mailed to all people affiliated with Harvard, including faculty, staff, and undergraduate students. Building or department captains were assigned the task of personally following up each request for a donation in their assigned areas. Student captains were responsible for contacting students in the Schools and Houses. Contributions were fowarded to the Cambridge Red Cross Chapter. It is not clear from the existing records when this program began or ended.
