Charles Murray received a Bachelor of Pedagogy (1906) from Drake University, and a B.S. (1910) and D.V.M. (1912) from Iowa State College (University). Murray was a school superintendent (1896-1908); an Instructor (1908-1912) and Associate Professor (1912-1914) in Bacteriology at Iowa State, and was placed in charge of the Department of Veterinary Research. He served as Professor and Head (1916-1943) and was named Dean Emeritus in 1949.

Dr. Murray was a member of the Iowa State Veterinary Association, the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Osborn Research Club, Sigma Xi, and Phi Kappa Phi. His research interests included enteritis of swine, brucellosis and avian leukosis complex. Murray married Minnie Best in 1897 and they had four children.
