William Thornton Innes was born in Philadelphia in 1874. Innes' printing career began in 1892 at Billstein and Son; however, Innes soon established his own printing firm, Innes & Sons, Printers and Publishers. During the 1920's Innes helped establish a trade school for printing and over the years Innes made a substantial contribution to industrial arts education in Philadelphia.

Innes' interests expanded beyond printing and in 1908 he authored a book about acquarium fish. In 1932 Innes began publishing a monthly magazine called THE ACQUARIUM. In 1956 Innes retired as president of the National Mutual Fire Insurance Co., thirteen years prior to his death on February 27, 1969. Innes was the last private resident on the Temple campus.
