Syracuse State School.
Variant namesBefore the facility renovation in 1969-1970, Syracuse State School officials contracted with the firm of Bill Rothschild (Monsey, N.Y.) to comprehensively document the historic buildings by photography. The survey included comprehensive exterior and interior views of the main building, grounds, out-buildings, and other school facilities. A new cornerstone was laid in 1971 for what became the Syracuse Developmental Center.

Chapter 220 of the Laws of 1862 authorized the treasurer of the New York State Asylum for Idiots to receive disbursements for necessary clothing expenses. Chapter 546 of the Laws of 1896 (Article IV, Section 70) authorized county supervisors to raise thirty dollars per state pupil, annually, to provide "suitable" clothing. That amount was paid to the treasurer of the institution on or before April 1 of each year. Also, upon admittance of a student, the school superintendent could make an agreement with any able parent or guardian of a child for the support, maintenance, and clothing of that child.

In 1972, a $26 million facility was built to replace the original institution (then called the Syracuse State School). The only original building remaining was the gatehouse at the end of the original entrance drive. Building interiors, exteriors, and grounds were documented prior to demolition by a contract photographer. In 1973 the new facility was named the Syracuse Developmental Center.
