Matthews, James Newton, 1852-1910
Variant namesMatthews grew up just outside Mason, Illinois, where his father was a doctor and the family had a farm. The first student to enroll at the future University of Illinois, Matthews was a newspaper editor and then became a country doctor in Mason. Matthews also published two volumes of poetry.
