Yoccum, John.
On March 3, 1843, at the request of the Citizen Party of the Stockbridge Nation, Congress passed "An act to provide relief of the Stockbridge Indians in the Territory of Wisconsin."
The act granted citizenship to the Stockbridge Indians, and provided for the election of commissioners and the partition of tribal lands into individual holdings. Protested by the majority Indian Party headed by John W. Quinney, the law was repealed in 1846.
