United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. Board of National Missions. Dept. of Health, Education and Welfare.

Hide Profile

From 1867 to 1878, women organized local mission societies that supported home mission schools. The Woman's Executive Committee was organized in 1878 and administered and supported mission schools in cooperation with the Board of Home Missions. In 1897 the Woman's Executive Committee was renamed the Woman's Board of Home Missions, assuming sole responsibility for mission schools. In the general reorganization of 1923, the WBHM turned its work over to the new Board of National Missions. Under the Board of National Missions the administration of the educational and medical work continued under various divisions, departments, units, and offices. (Please consult the finding aid for a more complete genealogy of the Board's medical and educational agencies.) In 1970 the General Department of Health, Education and Welfare ceased to exist and its functions were incorporated into the Department of Mission Development. These were transferred in 1972 to the Program Agency as the United Presbyterian Health, Education and Welfare Association.
