Roberson, Marvin, 1932-2010
Marvin Roberson (born 1932) was an athletic trainer at Brigham Young University and a friend of Hugh Nibley's.
Marvin Roberson was born March 21, 1932 in Long Beach, California to William H. and L. Ethelynde Roberson. When he was young, he moved to Chickasha, Oklahoma, where he graduate from high school. Marvin attended Brigham Young University on an athletic scholarship and graduated with a Bachelor's of Science degree. He served a mission in the United States Western Central States mission. He attended graduate school at Stanford University, where he got degrees in Physical Therapy and Education. He worked as a physical therapist and athletic trainer at Stanford, Foothill college, and for some NFL teams. He came to BYU as a trainer in 1966 and stayed there for 23 years. He then opened his own physical therapy practice. He was the athletic trainer for many European national and Olympic teams. He was also a member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Directors and was inducted into the Utah Athletic Trainers' Association Hall of Fame in 2003. Marv authored two books on athletic training and numerous articles. Marvin was married to Doris in 1959 and had three children: Echo Fling, Dina Roberson, and Conrad Roberson. He died on April 25, 2010.
Marvin went to the Nibley household almost every Monday night for Family Home Evening in the 1960s to 1980s. There, he taped these lectures given by Brother Nibley as just a practice lecture or his own thoughts. Marvin and Hugh met when Hugh needed his back fixed and was brought to Marvin to help. From there they became good friends.
