Philip Drew Dutton, son of Charles and Marcia (Drew) Dutton, was born in Ashland, Massachusetts in 1891. He received the A.B. from Oberlin in 1913 and the B.D. in 1916. In the same year, he married Helen Axford Wiley, a 1917 graduate of Oberlin College. Following his ordination to the Congregational ministry, Dutton served parishes in North Dakota and Ohio. From 1919 to 1950, Philip and Helen Dutton lived in Taigu, Shansi Province, China as missionaries of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. During World War II, Dutton held a pastorate in Benzonia, Michigan (1943-48). Helen and Philip Dutton were accomplished writers on China and faithful correspondents. Helen Dutton was also a translator of Chinese poetry. Dutton retired from missionary work in 1952 and died in 1975; Helen Dutton died in 1982 at age 93.
