Robert William Strong, Jr. (b. 1917, Painesville, Ohio-d. Mar. 16, 2006), U.S. Air Force officer, graduated from West Point in 1940 and received his pilot wings the following year. In 1944 he took command of the 62nd Bomb Squadron in the Southwest Pacific, later commanding the 39th Bomb Group on Guam. He completed 200 combat hours flying B-29s in raids over Japan. After the War he served as a tactical officer at West Point, then air attaché to Canada until 1952. The general began his service with the Strategic Air Command (SAC) in 1956 as director of operations, 4th Air Division; then commander, 376th Bomb Wing; and later commander, 4082nd Strategic Wing in Labrador. During the 1960s, he was commander, 825th Strategic Aerospace Division; commandant of cadets, U.S. Air Force Academy; commander of the 817th Air Division, SAC; and in 1966 became chief of staff, 8th Air Force. He retired in 1970.
