Edward W. Whitaker was from Ashford, Connecticut. He enlisted in the 1st Regiment of Connecticut Infantry Volunteers in 1861 and then in the 2nd Regiment of New York Cavalry Volunteers. In 1864 he was mustered in as captain of Company E, 1st Regiment of Connecticut Cavalry Volunteers.

Edward W. Whitaker (1841-1922), from Ashford Connecticut, enlisted as a private in the First Regiment of Connecticut Infantry Volunteers on April 15, 1861. He eventually enlisted in the Second Regiment of New York Cavalry and was promoted to Captain in 1864. On May 2, 1864 he was mustered in as Captain of Company E, First Regiment of Connecticut Cavalry Volunteers. He was made a breveted brigadier-general "for valor displayed..." on March 13, 1865. The letters are written to his sister, Adaline, who later became Mrs. George L. James.
