Alford graduated from West Seattle High School in 1934 and from the University of Washington in 1938. Received his 2nd Lieutenantʹs commission through the R.O.T.C. program at the university. Served briefly as a member of the Seattle Times editorial board. Sent to Fort Benning, Georgia in 1941 and received his Captainʹs commission at Camp Croft, South Carolina in 1943. Joined the 10th Mountain Division while it was training at Camp Hale, Colorado, where he was assigned to the Division Headquarters staff. Following WW II, Alford remained in the Army and retired as a Lt. Colonel.
