Art historian, educator; Brunswick, Maine. Born 1910. Shortly after arriving at Bowdoin College in 1936, Beam befriended Homer's nephew Charles, his family, and acquaintances and neighbors of the artist, and was given complete access to surviving family papers and memorabilia (given to Bowdoin College in the 1960s and now comprising the Winslow Homer Collection). Beam attended Harvard College (AB 1933, MA 1943, and PhD 1944) and was certified at the Courtauld Institute (1936). His PhD dissertation was "Winslow Homer, 1936-1910, A Biography."
