Asa Earl Martin (1885-1962) taught high school in Kansas before completing a master's degree at William Jewell College and doctoral work at Cornell. He came to Penn State in 1915 and soon appointed Head of the Department of History. In 1931, he was awarded the Outstanding Work in Research medal by the university. In 1928 he first published History of the United States from 1783 to 1865, revising it through the 1940s, retiring in 1949. In addition to his many articles, he published the following works: Our Negro Population: A Sociological Study of the Negroes of Kansas City, Missouri (M.A. thesis, William Jewell College, 1913); The Anti-Slavery Movement in Kentucky Prior to 1850 (1918), History of the United States (1928-1945); Pennsylvania History Told by Contemporaries (1925); and After the White House (1951).
