Elmer G. Powers was born and raised on a farm in Boone County, Iowa. He worked his father's land as a tenant and then took over the farm in 1933. For years Powers kept a diary, like his father and grandfather. Parts of his diary were published in "Wallaces' Farmer and Iowa Homestead" from 1931-1942. His diaries present a firsthand account of the New Deal's impact on rural Iowa, and describe, among other things, Powers' participation in the First AAA's Corn-Hog program.
