Hjalmar (Alfeld Hjalmar) Nordale (1894-1952) , the son of Anton Johann Nordale and Anna Mathilda (Anderson) Nordale, was born in Seattle and raised in Fairbanks, Alaska. He married LaDessa Hall in Fairbanks in 1926. Following stints as a commercial photographer (1913-1915), game warden (1916-1917), and soldier (1918-1919), he joined the staff of the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, where he rose from reporter to managing editor (1919-1930). Through the 1930s he worked in the traffic department of Pacific-Alaska Airways, and in the 1940s took over management of the family business, the Nordale Hotel in Fairbanks. He served as city councilman and mayor of Fairbanks, three terms each (1942-1948), and in the Alaska Territorial Senate (1941-1945).
