Private organization for the advancement of the mining industry.

Founded in 1892 in Springfield, Ill., the IMI promotes mining education and research. Through its journal, Proceedings of the Illinois Mining Institute, it provides up-to-date mining information to its members, who can be anyone directly engaged or interested in any branch of mining, or in mining supplies, appliances, or machinery. Coal mining interests predominate. Currently located on the campus of the University of Illinois in Champaign, the IMI works closely with the Illinois State Geological Survey.
