Hugh McCall (1767-1824) was born in North Carolina, but when he was about 5 years old the family moved to South Carolina. In 1794 he became an officer in the United States Army, and when he was mustered out in 1815, he was a Brevet Major. In 1818 he became a military storekeeper in Savannah, a position he also held in Charleston, South Carolina in 1821. From 1806 until 1823 he was the jailer at Savannah. In 1811, McCall published the first volume of his The History of Georgia; the second volume was published in 1816. it was the first history of Georgia and has been reprinted several times.
