Afro-American Studies and Research Program.
Program begun in 1969 at the University of Illinois in Champaign, not as a specific department or a major but with twenty five classes offered in various programs, then received a grant in 1981, under the leadership of Dr. Gerald McWorter, to develop a core curriculum. McWorter also founded the Illinois Council for Black Studies and made the U of I a member of the National Council for Black Studies that same year. He started the Afro Scholar Newsletter 1980 which became an international newsletter in 1983.
