The Institute was formed on 15 January 1931 under the name the Leningrad Research Institute for Chemical Physics (Leningradskii institut khemischeskoi fiziki). From 1931 to 1937 it was subordinated to the Ministerium for Heavy Industry (Narkomtyazhmash SSSR) and from 1937 to 1939 to that of Oil (Narkomat nefti). In 1940 it was united with the Institute for Physical and Chemical Research of the Academy of USSR, received its contemporary name, and entered the Academy. Its directors: N. N. Semenov (1931-1986); V. I. Goldanskii (after 1986).
