Gustave L. Wittrock (1895-1954) served the New York Botanical Garden as Docent, Custodian of the Herbarium (1935-1944) and Assistant Curator of Education. He wrote two books on gardening, one specializing in pruning. He was an expert in the food, dye and medicinal plants of the American Indian. He was born in Chicago, Ill. on July 3, 1895. He graduated from Grinnell College with an AB (1924) and an MA (1927). He worked as an assistant in the Botany Depts. of Grinnell, Johns Hopkins, the University of Washington and the University of Chicago. He came to NYBG in 1930 and was working here at his death in 1954.
