Born in Virginia, William Butler later lived in South Carolina and was an officer in the U.S. Continental Army, a plantation owner, and a politician. William Butler was the son of Captain James Butler (ca. 1738-1781).

Judge Andrew Pickens Butler was a member of the S.C. General Assembly, c.1824-1833; U.S. Senate, c.1847-1857; native of Edgefield, S.C.; son of U.S. Representative William Butler (1759-1821); son of U.S. Representative William Butler (1759-1821) and Behethland Foote Butler (1764-1853); married to Sarah Anne Simpkins Butler and Harriet Hayne Butler.
