Lawrence Harter was born in Mohawk, N.Y. on August 23, 1919. He was a graduate of Mowhawk High School (1937), where he had been active in sports. Harter was a member of the Mohawk Valley Ski Club and National Ski Patrol. He volunteered for the ski-troops as one of Minnie Dole's three letter men. Harter was working as a sales clerk when he enlisted in the Army at Utica, N.Y. on February 2, 1943. He joined the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale, Colo. where he was assigned to the Company B, 86th Infantry Regiment, later Company E, 90th Infantry Regiment, before transfer to Company E, 86th Infantry Regiment. Harter engaged in combat operations in Italy and was honorably discharged in October 1945. After the war, he was involved in the hardware and sporting goods business. Harter died on March 11, 2003.
