The essay describes a secret society known as the "Speaking Club of Harvard College," founded in September 1770 by Samuel Phillips (AB 1771). The club combined with the Mercurian Club in March 1773. The name of the club changed in 1801 to the Patriotic Association, and in 1825 became the Institute of 1770. Members of the club included Eliphalet Pearson (AB 1773), Fisher Ames (AB 1774), and Rufus King (AB 1777), among many others.

Albert Goodhue, Jr., earned his Harvard AB in 1937.
