Fred Orin Harris was born in Sumpter, Or., on Jan. 24, 1901. He received a B.A. in art and electrical Physics from the University of Washington in 1924 and an M.F.A. from New York University in 1930. Harris taught at the University of Oregon School of Architecture before joining the University of California, Berkeley, Department of Dramatic Art in 1941. He directed many plays in the Greek Theatre and Wheeler Auditorium. After serving as department chair, Harris concentrated on teaching and writing on the psychology of acting and directing. He was chair of the academic advisory committee that oversaw the design and construction of the Zellerbach Auditorium and Playhouse. Harris retired in 1967 and died on Aug. 28, 1998.
