Mary Margaret Barr was born in New Jersey in 1903. She studied French from an early age and finished her high school education abroad. She received her bachelor's degree from Vassar College and her Master's degree and Ph. D. from Columbia University. Well-known as a Voltaire bibliographer, Barr was a teacher of French and music at several universities in New York and Indiana. She moved to Indiana shortly after her marriage to James Clifford Koon in 1947. She died in 1990.
