Duane E. Dewel (born Burt, Iowa in 1901) was an Iowa state legislator and editor of the Kossuth County Advance. He attended the University of Missouri School of Journalism in 1924. He became associated with the Kossuth County Advance in 1924; was made co-publisher of that paper in 1935 and continued in that capacity until his retirement. In 1941 he became Governor of the Nebraska-Iowa District for Kiwanis International and from 1944-1949 he served as State Senator. In 1951 he became a Master Editor and Publisher as well as the president of the Press Columnists of Iowa. In 1952 he was reelected to the State Senate and was leader of the Senate Republican Majority in 1955. He was vice president of the Iowa Press Association in 1953. From 1962 to 1963 Mr. Dewel was state chairman of Iowans Against the Shaff Plan (for reapportionment) and in 1968 was chairman of Iowans Opposed to Annual Unlimited [Legislative] Sessions.
