Papal States. Ministero dell'interno

Established in 1847, this office combined responsibilities previously held by the Segreteria per gli affari di Stato interni and the Congregazione del buon governo. The ministry supervised the internal administration of the Papal States, including responsibility for local government, records, hospitals, almshouses, food supply, forests, health, and census. It also took powers from the Sacra Consulta, including responsibility for prisons (except the prisons of Rome). The minister was a member of the Consiglio dei ministri. In 1848 responsibility for food supply was transferred to the Ministero dei commercio. The office took responsibility for the maintenance of public order from the Ministero di polizia from 1848 until the Direzione generale di polizia was reestablished in 1850. In 1853 responsilility for the administration of justice was transferred from the Ministero di grazia e giustizia. Among the offices dependent on this ministry were the Commissione mista pel brigantaggio, Direzione generale degli archivi, and Direzione generale delle carceri, case di condanne, e luoghi di pena.
