John C. Provost, mining engineer and labor leader, was born in the midwestern United States about 1870 and moved to Arizona from Cripple Creek, Colorado in the early twentieth century. He and his wife, Nettie, had three children: Maxine, Arizona, and John, Jr. He died in 1931.
Provost claimed, leased, and managed mining operations in Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona. He was prominent in labor organization, and in 1912 became both the founder and first president of the Arizona Federation of Labor. Provost once stood as the Socialist Party candidate for Governor of Colorado. Upon his relocation to Arizona, however, he split with his former party. As a representative of the Labor Party, he served one term as a member of the Arizona House of Representatives and its Labor Committee, and subsequently officiated as that body's Sergeant-at-Arms.
