The West of Scotland Agricultural College has its origins in the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College, where a Department of Agriculture was established in 1891, although classes in agriculture had been in existence since 1887 and veterinary surgery and medicine had been taught in the 1830s at Anderson's University. In 1898 the Scotch Education Department drew up a scheme for an Agricultural College in the West of Scotland, to take over the existing agricultural teaching at the Technical College and at Kilmarnock Dairy School and the new College was established in 1899. The Technical College had representation on the Governing Body of the Agricultural College and contributed to the agricultural courses for a number of years after the establishment of the new College.
