William Lofland Dudley was a chemistry professor at Vanderbilt University and became Dean of the Medical Dept. (now the School of Medicine) in 1895. While at Vanderbilt, he also established the Vanderbilt Athletic Association and organized the Southern Inter-Collegiate Athletic Association, precursor of the Southeastern Conference. He also served on the executive committee of the Tennessee Centennial Exposition and was a fellow and vice-president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Vanderbilt's stadium, Dudley Field, is named for him.
