Master Sergeant (MSGT) Sherman Miller was sworn into the United States Army on 14 March 1941. He was assigned to the 44th Bombardment Group, the 66th Squadron of the Army Air Corps. He completed air crew training in Tampa, Florida; Seattle, Washington; Sacramento, California; Boise, Idaho; Walla Walla, Washington; Watertown, South Dakota and Tinker Field, Oklahoma. He was reassigned to the 99th Bombardment Group and received the Bronze Star for meritorious service. He served in the Mediterranean and European Theatres and flew combat missions over Italy, Germany, Hungary, Austria, and Russia. The 99th Bomb Group received two Presidential Unit Citations and twelve battle stars on its Mediterranean Theatre of Operation ribbon. The 99th Bomb Group flew 375 missions while Sherman Miller was a member of that unit. He was transferred out of the 99th Bomb Group into the 301st Bombardment Group in June of 1945. He was discharged on 5 September 1945.
